Abstract

Ludmila Marvanová has been curator for Fungi at the Czech Collection of Microorganisms (CCM). Her research interests were focused on the taxonomy and ecology of aquatic hyphomycetes. She was respected as one of a few leading experts for this ecological fungal group along with Enrique Descals, Cecil Terence Ingold and John Webster. At CCM she maintained her unique collection of aquatic hyphomycetes of which she supported several researchers by providing cultures for taxonomic projects. Aquatic hyphomycetes are critically important in maintaining energy fluxes between trophic levels in well-aerated freshwater ecosystems worldwide. They produce conspicuously shaped conidia (sigmoid, branched, or tetraradiate) that are adapted to leaf attachment. The functional diversity of aquatic hyphomycetes (e.g. different enzymatic capabilities) ensures degradation plant polymers, modulating food quality and palatability to invertebrates. Thereby, they facilitate energy and nutrient transfer in freshwater food webs. Litter-associated fungal parameters, such as fungal biomass, production, sporulation rate of aquatic hyphomycetes, and their effects on plant litter decomposition rates have been addressed in many field and laboratory studies. Human impacts have been also studied (e.g. the effects of nutrient enrichment and fungicide pollution). These studies are accompanied by biodiversity inventories and analyses of community structure of aquatic hyphomycetes using morphological and molecular approaches. This workshop will address (i) the impacts of environmental stressors (e. g. warming climate, stream pollution) on fungal community structure; (ii) benefits and pitfalls of aquatic fungal metabarcoding; (iii) what we learn from genomes of aquatic hyphomycetes; (iv) enzymatic capabilities as related to taxonomic and functional diversity.
