The ABS indicators study was commissioned by the Convention on Biological Diversity Secretariat to Leibniz-DSMZ. It aimed to analyze possible headline indicators for the ABS-related components of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF): Goal C and Target 13. The KMGBF was adopted during COP15 and it is the global strategic plan that will guide the countries to achieve the goals on conservation, sustainable use of biodiversity and fair and equitable benefit-sharing arising from its utilization.
The study analyzed Parties´ current capacities and the main challenges they would face in order to quantify and report on benefits received. It also proposes ABS headline indicators for both monetary and non-monetary benefits and provides methodological guidance for data collection and reporting. The study’s proposals have been incorporated into the KMGBF monitoring framework.
The study is available in English, French and Spanish at: ABS indicators study and it was made possible with the financial support of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Project objectives:
1) review existing sources of information for the measurement of benefit-sharing at national, regional or global levels;
2) understand how monetary and non-monetary benefits are received and accounted for at the national level;
3) propose and analyze possible measurements concepts for each indicator on the basis of the list provided in the annex to the Nagoya Protocolon access to genetic resourcesand the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity (NP);
4) perform a preliminary assessment of the methodology that would be needed for collection of data for selected indicators; and
5) provide relevant information to the AHTEG on indicators for the KMGBF.
